One couplet from each of the first 108 chapters of the Thirukkural, chosen by CICT: the whole of Virtue (அறத்துப்பால்) and Wealth (பொருட்பால்), with a Tamil commentary. அறத்துப்பால் · Virtue

1. கடவுள் வாழ்த்து · The Praise of God

அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதிபகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.

'A' leads letters; the Ancient Lord
Leads and lords the entire world.

2. வான்சிறப்பு · The Blessing of Rain

வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால்தான்அமிழ்தம் என்றுணரற் பாற்று.

The genial rain ambrosia call:
The world but lasts while rain shall fall.

3. நீத்தார் பெருமை · The Greatness of Ascetics

அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்கும்செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்.

With gentle mercy towards all,
The sage fulfils the virtue's call.

4. அறன் வலியுறுத்தல் · Assertion of the Strength of Virtue

அன்றறிவாம் என்னாது அறஞ்செய்க மற்றதுபொன்றுங்கால் பொன்றாத் துணை.

Do good enow; defer it not
A deathless aid in death if sought.

5. இல்வாழ்க்கை · Domestic Life

வையத்துள் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்பவன் வான்உறையும்தெய்வத்துள் வைக்கப் படும்.

He is a man of divine worth
Who lives in ideal home on earth.

6. வாழ்க்கைத் துணைநலம் · The Worth of a Wife

மங்கலம் என்ப மனைமாட்சி மற்றதன்நன்கலம் நன்மக்கட் பேறு.

An honest wife is home's delight
And children good are jewels abright.

குழல்இனிது யாழ்இனிது என்பதம் மக்கள்மழலைச்சொல் கேளா தவர்.

The flute and lute are sweet they say
Deaf to baby's babble's lay!

8. அன்புடைமை · The Possession of Love

அன்பிலார் எல்லாம் தமக்குரியர் அன்புடையார்என்பும் உரியர் பிறர்க்கு.

To selves belong the loveless ones;
To oth'rs the loving e'en to bones.

9. விருந்தோம்பல் · Hospitality

மோப்பக் குழையும் அனிச்சம் முகந்திரிந்துநோக்கக் குழையும் விருந்து.

Anicham smelt withers: like that
A wry-faced look withers the guest.

Right-sense and bashfulness adorn
